Ornithology

The project

Ornithology, by artist duo Anne Geene and Arjan de Nooy, shows photo series of birds in their many forms of appearance, categorised in a semi-scientific manner. To seduce the reader and to create a unique style for each chapter, Jeremy Jansen carefully selected different layouts and types of paper. The balance between multifaceted and simplicity is characterised in this book. Not immediately visible for all readers, is that the photographs in Ornithology have been laid out in a grid. Thanks to the uncompromising approach a managed diversity has occurred in the overall design.

Committee

As you look at the book, your perception of birds is immediately changed: you learn to look afresh. This has been done very cleverly and attractively. Ornithology shows in a playful manner the many ways in which birds are part of our lives, often without us realising it. As such, Ornithology is attractive for a large audience. Above all, the book shows how graphic design can play an important role in the implementation and documentation of research.
