The municipality of Rotterdam decided to realize a permanent physical marking of the Brandgrens. West 8 designed the marking that not only emphasizes the permanent marking of the Brandgrens, but also gives information about the historical context, accessible through the information stations and a website. The Brandgrens is marked by ground fittings at regular intervals in the street. Each ground fitting consists of a steel case around a rounded glass lens with a stylized image in red LED light. The light objects come to life at night illuminating the icon.

The restrained design adapts itself to the city in an unemphatic manner. It can be applied in all conceivable places. The focus of the committee’s appreciation concerns the elements that will be integrated into the pavement rather than the larger round objects providing information.
