YOUNG TALENTS IN THE RUNNING FOR THE RADO YOUNG DESIGNER AWARD.
Eindhoven, 15 July 2009 - The selection committee for the Rado Young Designer Award has nominated three up-and-coming Dutch design talents as finalists for the Incentive Prize of the Dutch Design Awards. The finalists' entire portfolio will be judged for the Award and the winner's reward will be a cash amount of € 10,000 and public appearance support offered by Rado. The 3 finalists are : Jelte of Abbema, Atelier NL and Mattijs van Bergen. The winner of the Rado Young Designer Award will be chosen by the international jury. His/her name will be announced during the Award Show on 17 October 2009 in Eindhoven.
The selection committee has selected the three finalists for the Rado Young Designer Award from more than 60 young designers, who either have registered themselves or have been entered by the scouting committee. The criteria on which the portfolios of the contestants have been judged were strict but unambiguous: a unique self-willed style with its own distinctive personal vision and language development, responsiveness to topical issues, up to 5 years of professional activity, broad education (i.e. being able to express oneself in various forms of expression), recognised by designer-colleagues as a talented designer, inventor and team worker and living and working in the Netherlands. The Rado Young Designer Award was conceived with the future of design in mind. The Swiss brand seeks actively to promote exceptional talent in the field of contemporary design and contributes in various ways to the education of young designers.
The high level of quality ensured an animated meeting during which the selection committee reached a unanimous decision. The selection committee consisted of Ton Kooymans (Chairman - Calllock), Anne Mieke Eggenkamp (Design Academy Eindhoven), Bert Dirrix (Diederendirrix Architecten), Berry Eggen (Eindhoven University of Technology), Carlo Wijnands, Caroline Hummels (Eindhoven University of Technology), and Dimitri Nieuwenhuizen (independent designer).
The finalists
|
Mattijs van Bergen |
|
Comment selection committee: Mattijs designs at the intersection of fashion and graphic art. He has an authentic and recognisable signature that despite the high fashion content has an immediate appeal for the audience. Through his use of material, conceptual research, and the elegance of his designs, he is a designer of considerable international potential. |
|
Atelier NL |
|
Comment selection committee Atelier NL proves that research is an essential part of the design process. The designers show the other side and the identity of design. In their designs, they make both the process and the development of their product visible, i.e. the stage between semi-manufactured and finished product. The result is a very readable, craft-based product that through its design compels the spectator to keep looking at it. |

Jelte van Abbema |
|
Comment selection committee Jelte's design is a reflection of the spirit of the time; it responds to the need to slow down and not get stressed by (the lack of) time. He opposes time. Through connections with other disciplines (science, computer technology, biochemistry), and a new approach, he opens the discussion about temporality, usefulness, and practicability. His designs call forth reflection and awareness. |
Rado Young Design Award
For the second year, Rado Switzerland is partner of the Dutch Design Prize and sponsor of the Rado Young Designer Award. The finalists are chosen for their originality, inventiveness and their remarkable, creative choice of materials. The award will be granted on October 17, 2009 in Eindhoven as part of the Dutch Design Awards 2009. The winner of the Award will receive a cash amount of € 10,000 and support from Rado in the field of PR and communications, such as a press meeting, articles in design magazines, etc. Finally yet importantly, he/she will have the honour to bear the title of Rado Young Designer for a whole year.
Inspired by the passion of tomorrow's creators, the noted Swiss watchmaker promotes these exceptional talents by establishing this award category of the Dutch Design Awards. Contributing to training the younger generation is indispensable to the process of human development in both technical and artistic terms. To engage with the enthusiasm of young people, who make up in creativity what they lack in experience, is a rewarding experience that never fails to generate ideas and projects. Like them, Rado believes that innovation often results from the refusal to make compromises in the realisation of an idea.
Dutch Design Awards
The Dutch Design Awards are the prestigious awards for the very best products in the field of Dutch Design. The annual event is comprised of a competition, the Dutch Design Awards exhibition, and the production of the Jaarboek Design 2009 (Yearbook Design 2009). In this way, a platform is created where each year the very best Dutch Design - across the full width of the professional field - is recognised and exhibited. A major context in this is the economic impact of the designs. The selection committees select the finalists per sub-category from the total number of scouted work and online entries. The international jury ultimately decides who will appear on the stage on Saturday 17 October 2007 to receive a Dutch Design Award. Twenty Dutch Design Awards will be presented in the main categories of Communication, Product, and Spatial. The jury also awards an ‘overall' prize - The Golden Eye - to the most successful design of 2009. The competition includes a number of special prizes: the Audi Design Award (the public award), the Rado Young Designer Award, and the Best Client Award. The designs by all finalists and winners will then be put on display for a whole week during the Dutch Design Week. The exhibition of the Dutch Design Awards will be presented in the Brainport Greenhouse on the Stadhuisplein in Eindhoven.
