Radio Garden

2017

The online platform Radio Garden introduces new online live radio or: streaming. By turning a 3D globe, you can scroll through around 12,000 stations in more than 7,000 cities. At a time when most people tend to be focused on their own immediate environment, this projects shows that radio has no borders and can unite the world. The starting point for the design of Radio Garden was that everything could be left out. The remaining elements were incorporated in the interface raw and large as life. The interface focuses on the invisible aesthetics of interaction. When you zoom in, you arrive in the city to which you are listening and when you click on a densely populated area, you arrive in the biggest city. As you move from city to city, you see how the local time jumps from zone to zone. These hundreds of tiny design decisions result in the platform’s single fluid experience that both young and old can grasp.

In addition to strong features, the committee admires the preference for simplicity. This puts listening to the radio back on the map and offers a platform to thousands of interesting radio stations that would otherwise remain relatively unknown.

Committee

It is impressive when you realise the penetration of this project, something few equal: Radio Garden has been visited more than eighty million times and radio stations from around the world are continually being added. This clearly demonstrates the need and is a confirmation of the strength of the design. Above all, the website is exceptionally well programmed and designed, resulting in an extremely user-friendly radio platform. The typography and spacing top off the pleasant experience. In addition to strong features, the committee admires the preference for simplicity. This puts listening to the radio back on the map and offers a platform to thousands of interesting radio stations that would otherwise remain relatively unknown.
