Philips FreeStreet, street lighting

The project

The FreeStreet lighting system puts an end to the traditional lamp posts along streets and instead is a series of Leds suspended from thin cables that are barely visible during the day.

Committee

The Philips FreeStreet LED lighting system no longer uses obstacle-like streetlight poles but elegant cables that are hardly visible. The result is that the slim, cocoon-like light fittings seem to float in the air freely.

— A fine example of product development that makes us safer and more comfortable on the streets, both in the technological and social sense. (Source: C.R., Dutch Design Yearbook, 2011).
