Opera Amsterdam

Exhibition Design V&A Ceramic Study Galleries

The project

Design studio Opera devised a layout consisting of two circular and two rectangular glass cabinets, housing a total of 26,000 ceramic objects. Despite the heavy load of the ceramic objects the cabinets are remarkably transparent. The glass cabinets make the collection accessible for the public. (source: RjdK, Dutch Design Yearbook, 2011)

Committee

A visible depot. The design of glass cases containing the objects from the collection that are normally inaccessible to the public blurs the boundaries between the public and the curators. Build for and on view in Victoria & Albert Museum in London.

— ' The resulting ‘behind-the-scenes’ experience straddles the areas of conservation and exposition.' (source: RjdK, Dutch Design Yearbook, 2011)
