Gijs Schalkx develops, builds, and tinkers with speculative vehicles and functional prototypes that may seem absurd at first glance, but mount a sharp critique of modern mobility. His machines expose our dependence on the vast, unseen systems of labour, infrastructure, and resource chains underpinning everyday life.

From a car retrofitted to de-refine his own plastic waste into fuel, to an electric flying bicycle, Schalkx constructs each machine by hand using universally available resources. Through humour, curiosity, and a DIY approach, he unpicks the convenient assumptions and industrial myths of sustainability, grounding discussions of the energy transition and hypermobility in direct, physical reality.
