Boerenverstand

The project

The title ‘Boerenverstand’ refers to the clever way in which farmers kept patching up their fences with bits of wood. Krijn Christaansen and Cathelijne Montens used a similar working method. They visited farms to collect old wood and at the same time record the stories about its origins. Next, the boards and the stories behind them were brought together on a poster. The fences are quite artificial, thereby they stress the decline of the traditional fence.

Committee

An intriguing design that raises the issue of the loss of cultural heritage in the Dutch landscape in an impressive manner. The apparent need to apply a polyurethane coating onto the wood puts the concept of sustainability in a special light.
